A celestial planisphere featuring the constellations of the northern and southern hemispheres with a traditional representation of the zodiac signs and constellations including the Dragon, Serpent and Hydra. The celestial star map is the work of the family of Dutch cartographers Frederik de Wit. Astronomers divide it into grids to make it easier to use. Planispheres have been used for reference since time immemorial. A planisphere is a type of star map. Atlas Coelestis is a star atlas published posthumously in 1729, based on observations made by the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed.
